Oslo – The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced today that Maria Corina Machado, Venezuelan opposition leader, has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to strengthen democracy and peace.
According to zharfa News Agency, the Committee, on Friday, October 10, praised Machado for her courageous fight for freedom and human rights in Venezuela. The award will be presented in Oslo on December 10, 2025.
This year, 338 candidates, including 244 individuals and 94 organizations, competed for the prestigious prize, which recognizes contributions to fostering friendship among nations and reducing global tensions.
Unlike other Nobel Prizes awarded in Stockholm, the Peace Prize is presented in Oslo in the presence of the Norwegian King, following Alfred Nobel’s will.
The five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee, appointed by the Norwegian Parliament, selected Machado after its final meeting on Monday. Last year, the prize was awarded to Japan’s Nihon Hidankyo for its work toward nuclear disarmament.
Nominations for the prize are made by lawmakers, past laureates, and select university professors.
