UK on International Day of the Girl: “We support the education of Afghan girls.”

The British Embassy for Afghanistan, on the occasion of the International Day of the Girl, announced its unwavering support for Afghan girls who have been deprived of their right to education. This comes as the Taliban continues to impose severe restrictions on girls’ schooling.

According to the Zharfa News Agency (), the British Embassy wrote on the X platform today, Saturday, Mizan 19 (October 11th in the current year’s approximate equivalent), in observance of the International Day of the Girl, that educating girls not only empowers them but also strengthens communities and drives economic growth. The embassy stressed that a country’s progress is impossible without the participation of half of its population.

Since taking control of Afghanistan, the Taliban has barred girls from attending schools and even from medical education until “further notice.” This is despite Afghanistan facing a critical shortage of female doctors.

Based on a UNESCO report, approximately 1.4 million girls above the sixth grade in Afghanistan are currently denied access to education. This deprivation jeopardizes the future of millions of girls and the development of the country.

The international community and Afghan citizens have repeatedly called on the Taliban to allow girls to resume their education. A UN survey indicates that 92 percent of the Afghan population believes that girls must have the right to education.

Despite these demands, the Taliban has so far ignored these calls and has not eased the restrictions. This situation has sparked widespread concerns among human rights activists and the global community.
