Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, has appointed Rabab Fatima as his new Special Representative for Afghanistan and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).
According to Zharfa News Agency, Fatima, an experienced Bangladeshi diplomat, will replace Rosa Otunbayeva. The United Nations, in a statement, expressed appreciation for Otunbayeva’s services.
Rabab Fatima has more than 30 years of experience in national and international civil service. She has worked in bilateral and multilateral diplomacy, policy-making, and program implementation. She also has an extensive record of cooperation with UN-affiliated institutions.
This prominent diplomat is the first woman to be elected Chair of the UN Peacebuilding Commission and has served as Vice-President of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly.
She currently serves as Assistant Secretary-General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States.
This appointment comes after the UN Security Council extended the mandate of UNAMA for another year on Monday, 25 Jawza (June 16), of the current year.
